Tooth Extraction
Saving teeth is always the priority in dentistry. However, there are a number of reasons why a tooth may need to be extracted, including decay, infection, and trauma. While tooth extraction may sound painful, modern techniques make the process virtually painless. Dr. Brian K. Tavoian, who opened his practice in 1992, performs gentle tooth extractions for patients in Cedar City, UT. Once your tooth is safely extracted, you take advantage of our state-of-the-art restorative treatments, including dental implants.
What Are the Benefits of Tooth Extraction?
Tooth extractions can restore oral health following an advanced tooth infection, impaction, or serious trauma. Meanwhile, tooth crowding can complicate orthodontic treatments, and extraction is sometimes a necessary first step toward a straighter smile. Patients who undergo tooth extraction at our Cedar City dental practice can benefit from:
- A safe and effective procedure
- Relief from pain
- Improved oral health
- Prevention of further infection
- Candidacy for orthodontics
Although tooth extraction sounds painful, most patients find that it was far more comfortable than they predicted. Dr. Tavoian will carefully administer local anesthesia to ensure that all sensation in the treatment area is numbed before the performs the extraction. Our office also offers multiple forms of sedation, if needed.
When Is a Tooth Extraction Needed?
After your examination, Dr. Tavoian may recommend tooth extraction if you:
- Have an impacted tooth
- Have severe teeth crowding
- Have a damaged tooth
- Have a severely decayed tooth
- Underwent a root canal that failed
- Have an abscess
- Have an impacted wisdom tooth
Tooth extraction is a safe and effective treatment that can help to resolve a number of oral health issues.
How Are Tooth Extractions Performed?
Tooth extraction is a straightforward outpatient procedure that can be completed at our dental practice. First, Dr. Tavoian will administer local anesthesia to numb the area around the tooth. This can ensure that you feel little to no discomfort throughout the treatment. Our office can also provide nitrous oxide, oral sedation, and IV sedation options to help you achieve deep relaxation under our care.
Once you are comfortable, Dr. Tavoian will use forceps to gently loosen the tooth before removing it from your jaw. An impacted tooth will probably require incisions in your gum tissue to access the tooth before it can be removed. Molars may need to be separated into smaller pieces before they can be removed in order to prevent damaging surrounding soft tissue.
One the tooth is removed, gauze is placed to control bleeding. A blood clot will eventually form that will stop bleeding and aid in your recovery. Dr. Tavoian or a member of our dental team will provide simple recovery guidelines that should be followed closely in order to ensure a successful recovery.
